Into the Fiberverse
A couple weeks ago, I got fiber internet, glass cable running directly into my home. It's lovely, and I'm so very lucky, especially since I’ve grown up so close to Corning (and yes, the above-mentioned cable is a very proudly Corning branded cable). Even though it wasn’t made locally, I can trust that cable was designed by neighbors near and far.
But this has sparked something else, a small jolt that some of my long ethernet runs could be fiber. So after some long youtube videos and some light reading (ha, did you catch that?), I've got some equipment coming to deploy my first private link in my house; it's still only at 1Gbps (because 10Gbps is really expensive and in the fiber world 2.5/5Gbps hasn’t happened).
I'm expecting almost 0 benefits from an upgrade like this since current transit times to that switch are less than 3ms, but the fun we have along the way counts. Plus, like Corning, this is a story of discovery and reinvention. Sometimes it’s fun to do things just a little bit differently.
